The Madrid Institute for Advanced Study - MIAS
The Madrid Institute for Advanced Study - MIAS is the first Institute for Advanced Study on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Spanish-American world. It is a research center created jointly by Casa de Velázquez and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, as part of the UAM-CEI international campus of excellence.
It is a member of the European Network of Institutes for Advanced Studies (NetIAS), which comprises 24 institutes, and of the worldwide network (UBIAS), which comprises 47.
The missions
The role of MIAS is to promote excellence and internationalization in research by hosting researchers, mainly in the humanities, social sciences and law, with a cross-disciplinary approach linking the Iberian world to global perspectives.
MIAS contributes to building dynamic, international and multidisciplinary knowledge communities. Selected researchers are freed from any academic or administrative obligations, to devote themselves fully to innovative projects in an environment conducive to intellectual exchange between disciplines and cultures.
Governance
MIAS is managed by a Board of Directors made up equally of members from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Casa de Velázquez. It is headed by Susana Sánchez Ferro, contract professor of constitutional law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with Nancy Berthier, director of Casa de Velázquez, as vice-director.
MIAS Fellows
The MIAS scientific community is made up ofaround thirty researchers (fellows) whose stay in Madrid can vary from three months to five years. The MIAS invitation policy is geared towards individual researchers, relieved of any teaching or administrative obligations during their stay, to develop an innovative project in an environment conducive to scientific debate between disciplines and civilizations.
The Institute does not impose exclusive disciplinary or geographical priorities, and supports fundamental research across the entire spectrum of the humanities, social sciences and law. Although the Institute intends to facilitate the incorporation of Spanish researchers into the national scientific environment, knowledge of the Spanish language or previous research in Spain are not prerequisites for the recruitment of visiting researchers.
Except for special arrangements, the call for applications for the various MIAS host programs (Tomás y Valiente contracts, Marcel Bataillon program and short-stay arrangements) is launched every year in November.
MIAS-EHEHI seminars
During their stay, all MIAS fellows are invited and encouraged to present their research projects at seminars held on Monday mornings, alternating between the UAM campus and Casa de Velázquez. Fellows are free to invite colleagues working on related themes or disciplines from other universities in the Madrid region, as well as EHEHI members present at Casa de Velázquez.
Multidisciplinary in nature, this event is also an opportunity for MIAS fellows to exchange ideas, meet and debate with other researchers at Casa de Velázquez.
Unless otherwise stated, the seminars are open to the public (subject to availability) and are also broadcast online.
