In residence: artistic creation

Through the programs of the Académie de France in Madrid, Casa de Velázquez welcomes some thirty artists in residence each year, for stays of between two and eleven months. These residencies are aimed at artists at different stages of their careers, and reflect the diversity of contemporary artistic practices.

The range of disciplines covers the major creative fields - drawing, printmaking, sculpture, painting, architecture, musical composition, choreography, photography, film and video - and also extends, through collaborative grants, to scenography, literary creation, textile arts, curatorial practices and graphic design. Since 2021, Casa de Velázquez has also supported artistic doctoral research, affirming its commitment to the dialogue between creation, research and experimentation.

The Casa de Velázquez artistic community

Each year, 13 winners are selected following a call for applications open to all artists, regardless of nationality, with a significant body of work and a project linked to the Iberian Peninsula. Applications are received in autumn, with the final phase taking place in spring, with an interview at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Four Spanish artists have also been selected through specific calls for applications in partnership with the cities of Malaga, Santander, Valencia and the Diputación de Zaragoza.

Artists in residence 2025-2026

Throughout the year, recruitment campaigns are launched in partnership with public and private institutions. These collaborative grants enable us to host artists for working periods of 1 to 3 months. Each partnership has its own specific recruitment conditions.

Artists 2025-2026

Each year, Casa de Velázquez funds a 3-year "research-through-project" artistic doctoral contract. Applicants must be registered at a French university and present a thesis project in the field of artistic creation.

Call 2025 was held in collaboration with the EUR Arts et Humanités of the Université Côte d'Azur.
